This Fondriest bike has been my loyal companion for more than 21 years. I nicknamed it 'giallorossa' for its colours (it means 'red and yellow' in Italian) which are also the colours of my favourite soccer team, AS Roma. This bike is now in Italy and I keep using it during my summer holidays over there. It is still a great bike and I changed just a few components from the day I bought it. I used it in Italy, UK and Australia before I purchased a new Trek bike. It never deceived me and it has been a very reliable bike so far. It is not for sure the best bike of its time but I have such a particular attachment to this piece of metal that reminds me my youth when I had no responsibilities. Cycling in Italy is undoubtedly very beautiful. It is not just the wonderful scenaries, the amazing mountains and the astonishing coast lines. It is more than that. I rediscovered what it means cycling in Italy during my holiday and my tours reminded me my youth and some of the things that I have almost forgotten. One of them is the pleasure to cross your road with other cyclists that in any occasion wave their hand to you or simply say "Ciao" in that instant that our glance crosses each other. It might seem irrelevant but this is one of the things that I missed most in Australia. That simple gesture hides tons of meanings. First of all it is a sign of respect for another fellow cyclist and secondly it is a sign of acknowledgement of the fatigue that ALL cyclists have to experience when on the road. "E' arrivato di nuovo il periodo dell'anno dell' '... anche a te e famiglia' ...", questa e' ormai la frase che sento piu' spesso pronunciare dall'Italia almeno al pari di "Buone Feste". Mi rendo conto che con gli anni trovare motivazioni per celebrare una festa che in realta' nemmeno si sa che ricorrenza dovrebbe onorare sembra sempre piu' difficile. My day starts with a bike ride to work. It is the most beautiful, relaxing and rewarding activity of the day for sure. When I arrived in Perth I managed to buy a second hand hybrid bike paid just $180 (~€ 130). It is an Avanti Blade 1.0  size 54 that needed a bit of care. I replaced the wheels ( Shimano WH-R500 ) with another additional $100 (~€ 70), gave good clean and, voila, I was able to roll.  A special thank goes to Carsten and Jacey that lent me the necessary tools to dismount the old cassette and install it in the new wheel-set. I also pimped the bike with some additional accessories (bike computer, small pump, saddle bag and a back USB light for the night rides back home), all of them rigorously used. To go to work, I usually take the long way to admire the Perth City Skyline and enjoy the morning breeze. Oggi e' un giorno particolare, non solo perche' e' la festa nazionale piu' importante dell'Australia ma anche perche' 3 anni fa in questo giorno sono diventato cittadino australiano. Oggi quella cittadinanza assume un significato maggiore, in quanto la strada del mio cammino mi ha riportato nella terra dei canguri. Il ritorno in Australia e' stato una bella sorpresa, le persone che avevo conosciuto un tempo ci hanno accolto nuovamente come fossimo mai andati via e con un calore inaspettato da una cultura molto piu' vicina a quella fredda inglese. Eccomi di nuovo a scrivere dopo lungo periodo una nuova pagina delle mie avventure. A dire la verità più di una nuova pagina si tratta di riscrivere la stessa storia con qualche anno in più e un punto di vista differente. Per farla breve, come alcuni di voi già sapranno, mi sono trasferito nuovamente a Perth. Le problematiche che ci hanno afflitto in Italia stavano letteralmente strangolando me e la mia famiglia. Per ragioni che non tutti riusciranno a capire, la soluzione era partire nuovamente in un luogo che potesse garantire tranquillità e serenità a me e Criz e di conseguenza garantire un futuro gioioso per le nostre bambine. In spite of the actual meaning of the day (invasion day) the Australians recognise in this day their identity as Australian, paying respect to the indigenous community and their elders. This day, however, acquired a special meaning for me as I have been granted the Australian citizenship. I have been really proud to have become Australian on this special day, honored by the presence of several VIPs at the ceremony such as the Mayor of South Perth, the Governor of WA and some Members of the Federal Parliament of Australia. The ceremony was held at Sir James Mitchell Park in South Perth and, as a former naval officer of the Italian Navy, I was very delighted to see the Australian navy to be at the head of the ceremony raising the Australian flag and paying respect to it with the flight of 4 acrobatic planes of the navy. ...

Certe cose le leggi sui libri di storia e poi te ne dimentichi senza davvero dargli tanta importanza. Eppure quando poi le vivi e ti capita di incontrare degli ITALIANI di Fiume ti domandi ma loro sono italiani davvero? Mi e' capitato qualche giorno fa durante un incontro culturale con la Dante Alighieri Society nel Western Australia. C'era qualche italiano e tra essi anziani signori e signore che nel dopoguerra sono stati costretti a scappare da Fiume a causa degli eccidi, perpetrati per motivi etnici e/o politici, ai danni della popolazione italiana della Venezia Giulia e della Dalmazia occorsi durante la seconda guerra mondiale e negli anni immediatamente seguenti ( http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacri_delle_foibe ). Mi ha sorpreso incontrare persone che si sentono italiani e parlano italiano perfettamente ma che in Italia non hanno piu la loro casa o i loro ricordi di infanzia. Il 22 Dicembre 2012 sara' il compleanno della c ostituzione "la piu' bella del mondo" tanto per citare la trasmissione di Benigni di ieri sera che ho appena rivisto da Italiano all'estero. Ebbene si, sono rimasto nuovamente incantato da questo mervaglioso giullare cantastorie che ci ha letto i primi 12 articoli della Costituzione Italiana . Ogni articolo che ha letto e' stato vissuto da me con un groppo in gola e le lacrime agli occhi, fiero della mia italianieta' anche se vivendo in terra straniera. Ma sono stato particolarmente folgorato dall'articolo 2 che descrive appieno il mio modo di essere e la mia natura di uomo vissuto per gran parte della sua vita in Italia.  Leggetelo qua sotto ancora una volta se volete: Articolo 2 della Costituzione Italiana " La Repubblica riconosce e garantisce i diritti inviolabili dell'uomo, sia come singolo sia nelle formazioni sociali ove si svolge la sua personalità, e richiede l'adempimento ...

Here I am again after this spectacular short trip in Albany, the south west of Australia. This corner of Australia is simply beautiful and for the first time after a bit of sightseeing in Oz, I have been across with something that really amazed me. Albany itself is a nice and small city that has more character than Perth, where the Victorian architecture left space to the ugly skyscrapers. Spectacular views from the rocky beaches together with breathtaking hills and mountains: this is Albany and the surrounding areas.  We had a walk along the peninsula you can see on the pictures. It was a very hard but worth walk along the crest of the rocks where Criz sat for an hour or so admiring the view, and to have a well deserved rest after the hard walk.

Dopo tantissimo tempo di inattivita' dovuta alla schiena e con parecchi chili in piu', mi sono cimentato in questo interessante cicloraduno oraganizzato per beneficienza. Assieme a me anche i miei colleghi Niall e Eddy. E' stato davvero strano avere a disposizione tutta l'autostrada per piu' di 8000 partecipanti. Io ce l'ho messa tutta per iniziare a perdere peso, ma alla fine della manifestazione c'erano quelli dell'Algida (qui chiamata Street) che davano gelati gratis :) After a long period of inactivity due to my back issues and with a 15 kg "excess baggage", I challenged myself with this charity  bike ride . I spent a relaxing week in Melbourne with Criz. It is very different from Perth and more similar to Europe. We really had a great time, especially for the company of our friends Jeremy, Sarah, Andreas and Vimala.

Dear Friends, Last week I visited the Pilbara region again for work. As most of you may already know, the Pilbara is famous for the mining industry and it is where my company is mining. The region is extremely dry, especially during the winters, and very hot during summers. When I went there in the past I could not enjoy and appreciate the beauty of this place. I had just tried to survive the extreme weather conditions (a temperature higher than 45 °C!). In fact this time of the year is really pleasant and the colors of the Pilbara are different. From the predominant reddish color of the soil  typical in summer, that makes the area similar to Mars, to the colors of some flowers I had not seen in my life (see the Mulla Mulla in the picture - violet flower). It has been a fantastic experience and I hope to visit it again during my holidays to discover the fantastic gorges in the Karajini National Park that everybody is talking about.
